English names a boon for job hunters: Study

UBC finds applicants have 40% better chance of an interview.

Job hunters with English names have a 40 per cent greater chance of landing an interview compared to people with Chinese, Indian or Pakistani names, according to a University of British Columbia study released yesterday.

Six thousand mock resumés were drafted and sent to online job postings in the Toronto area, across 20 occupational categories.

The study found that English names — like John Smith — had a much higher rate of callbacks than non-English names, despite identical resumés.

The findings surprised Yan Liu, who has been looking for a job since February.

“Employers probably get hundreds of resumés,” she said. “Maybe they look at them for 10 seconds and only read the name, not their work experience.”

Liu graduated from Concordia University with a degree in information technology. She has been living in Vancouver since November of 2008.

She completed a job hunting program last week through SUCCESS, an organization connecting Chinese immigrants to employers.

“At my university in China, my professor gave me the name “Maggie,” but I don’t use it anymore,” she said. “I think my Chinese name ‘Yan’ is easy for most people to pronounce.”

The UBC study seems to offer an explanation as to why skilled immigrants fare poorly in the Canadian labour market.

“The findings suggest that a distinct foreign-sounding name may be a significant disadvantage on the job market — even if you are a second- or third-generation citizen,” according to the study’s author, economics professor Philip Oreopoulos.

Michael Lam, director of employment services at SUCCESS, said many immigrants are encouraged to use an English name.

“It makes it much easier for employers if they can pronounce an applicant’s name,” Lam said.

So, any comment about this topic?
After reading this news article, i spent a few minutes thinking about my English name. In Canada, Car Men will be automatically become my English name (Carmen).... Most of the people here including lecturers will write my name "Carmen" instead of "Car Men"....

Anyways, I'm working on my journal on this HOT topic!
Give some suggestion on whether u agree with it or against it.

weekend....

  • usually my weekend is occupied with loads of assignments and homework but not for the first week of school maybe starting from next week.
  • weather is getting hotter and hotter! with the window opens widely, i still sweat. LoL
  • boring, boring, boring, boring.....
  • get influenced by my sister to play Dreamer RO .... Internet here is fast enough to play, no worries..... HAHA
  • NO SCHOOL tomorrow, another day off!! is because of Victoria day.
  • hopefully will go to Metrotown tomorrow to catch a movie (got free movie ticket from debit card), if not, i think i will rot in my apartment. LoL
  • slept way too much during the weekend. OMG, 13 hours weh! Am i sick or what? Nono, just feel like sleeping, thats all! >.<
  • parents say no Mac Book till end of 2010 unless my laptop is spoil (which is impossible for me - too good in take caring laptop) or i sell off my laptop (which is quite hard and is no longer valuable). The only solution to get a Mac Aluminum is to wait till the end of my 2nd year (maybe something more advance from Apple will release by that time) >.<

first week of school....

Back to School!!!!!

  • skipped the first day of school as i didnt manage to get cheap airticket on that day.
  • new faces around the college.
  • population of Chinese increased in the college.
  • some prof (hot prof) left for summer vacation. :(
  • enrolling in Phy 110, Bio 120, Chem 123 and Eng 101 (SFU's Eng)

Physics 110 (8am - 9am)

  • with talkative Prof Vladan Jovovic, male
  • pretty boring because i have no interest for that course. (forced to take it)
  • met a Malaysian little cute guy (Imran) who sits beside me on the first day. From CIMP too! He recognized me because i wore CIMP shirt on the first day.
  • had quiz on Friday and im confused with 1 million and 10 thousand. =.=
  • hopefully i'll enjoy the entire course with him.

.
English 101 - SFU's English (11am - 12pm)

  • with hot prof named Leslie Mercer (Hot - according to ratemyprofessors.com)
  • is a female. Disadvantage for female students and advantages for male students
    (again, according to ratemyprofessors.com)
  • her class is pretty full (not like Zeef class last sem).. Heard that Zeef has only 5 students for his ENG100 courses. HAHA
  • loads of homework for the first week, cant imagine the amount of homework for the whole course.
.

.
.
1 hour break (except Friday)
.

.
.

Biology 120 (1pm - 2pm)

  • with Dr. Todd, male
  • a prof from UBC (University of British Columbia) and Douglas College (popular for medical)
  • he is funny, cute, friendly, talkative, happy-go-lucky kind of person.
  • his class is much much much much more enjoyable and students have lots of fun compared to the bio class with Keng.
  • unfortunately, he will be teaching us for only half of the semester only, and the following half is gonna be Keng. :( I cant imagine the number of students that will drop the course after Keng take over and hopefully there will be no one.

2 hours of break (except Friday)

Chemistry 123 (4pm - 5pm)

  • with prof. xxxxx (no idea who the heck he is as i skipped the introduction part on the first day and perhaps he's not gonna introduce for the second time for the people who absent)
  • is a new prof in the college, spec guy, boring, not interactive.... just bad!! Worst Chem teacher i ever had, so far as i can see. The best is still Mesh!
  • only 12 people in the class compared to the full class with Mesh last sem. Everyone is waiting for Mesh (vacation) to continue with their Chem course (next sem). I wished i can too but i need to finish everything within this sem. Too bad.
  • I guess this is the first class i ever fall asleep in the college (on Wednesday). Can you imagine how boring it is?

Basically, i have 4 hours of courses BUT 5 hours of break!!! WTF!!!
Fine, i will get use to it soon!
